Our area is fantastically served by independent local news – the Bridlington Echo, the Bridlington Free Press, the Driffield & Wolds Weekly, the The Holderness & Hornsea Gazette, Bridlington Gold Radio, Great Driffield Radio and This Is The Coast Radio to name just a few.
Strong local media plays a crucial role making you aware of what is being done in your name and in scrutinising local decisions, but local journalism is not just about the news, local media is truly grounded in our local communities.
While East Yorkshire’s local offering is reassuringly strong, even here it is under pressure, and the spread of areas across the UK where communities have sadly lost all access to independent local journalism is worrying.
So I raised our local news outlets with the Government Minister in Parliament just before it prorogued recently, I’m in discussions with them about what more I can do to help, and I’ll keep pushing for support so that our area is not left behind.
